Nexans wins 8 million Euros power cable contract in Thailand
33kV submarine cables will be installed to create new power interconnections for islands in the Krabi Province
Paris, February 6, 2008 – Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has been awarded an 8 million Euros contract by the Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited (ITD) to supply 33 kV submarine cables for a project providing a number of new power interconnections between islands in the Krabi Province in southern Thailand, on the shore of the Andaman Sea. The project, on behalf of Thailand’s Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), is for the 33 kV submarine cable extension to Koh Siboya, Koh Pu, Koh Phi Phi Don, Raile Bay and Koh Lanta at the Krabi province.
The project in the Krabi Province is part of an overall scheme to develop Thailand’s power infrastructure, with specific focus on providing increased capacity and improved security for its islands. This is being driven by Thailand’s rapidly accelerating growth in tourism and subsequent exponential increase in power consumption – PEA anticipates additional power capacity will continue to grow by 10 to 15 per cent per annum.
For this project, Nexans shall supply over 33.3 km, in two lengths, of XLPE insulated, lead sheathed, copper conductor 3-core 33 kV submarine cable, with an integrated fibre optic element. A single 3.8 km length of cable, with a cross-section of 120 mm2, will be used for the Raile Bay crossing. The remainder of the cable, with a cross-section of 185 mm2, will be used to create three power links between the islands of Koh Pu, Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Siboya – total approximate length of 27 km, as well as the 2.5 km Koh Lanta island interconnection.
“Nexans’ strong historical presence and excellent track record in projects for Thailand’s PEA were key factors in winning this contract” said Patrick Barth, Managing Director of Nexans’ High Voltage activity. He added: “We have just completed a major contract for them, working as part of the consortium with ITD, to supply a 24 km, 115 kV link between the mainland and Koh Samui island.”
The 33 kV submarine cables will be manufactured at Nexans’ Halden plant in Norway and will be delivered in October 2008. They will be installed by ITD’s Marine department.
