Nexans to supply cables for the new lines in Spain's high-speed train network (AVE)

Paris, September 16, 2004 - Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has signed a contract with Alcatel and Siemens - as relevant members of the Joint Venture formed by several companies - for the supply of signalling cables for the 3 high-speed train lines that are currently under construction in Spain, for a total of approximately 5 million euros.

These lines correspond to the Madrid-Toledo, Lleida-Barcelona and Segovia-Valladolid links in Spain's high-speed train network, Alta Velocidad Española (AVE), one of the most dynamic in Europe in terms of growth.

This contract comprises all the cable requirements of the high-speed line Alcatel-Siemens consortium and represents around 50% of the project's demand of these types of cables. The applications will be for signalling, track circuits and balise systems.

These cables will be laid near overhead power cables carrying an alternative current of 25 kV, which generate a significant amount of interference to the conductors of the communication cables. As a result, this requires adequate protection with a combination of copper and steel screens.

These cables have gone through a rigorous approval process on the part of the GIF (Gestor de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias).

All the cables included in this contract will be produced at Nexans' plant in Maliaño (Spain). With an annual production capacity of over 10 billion metres of conductor per year, the Cantabrian factory is one of the largest in the world for this type of cable.

"The technological requirements for competing in a demanding market such as high-speed railways, makes it essential to use benchmark manufacturers" according to Yvon Raak, Nexans' Executive Vice President, Europe Area. "Failure of the signalling and balise systems can have dramatic consequences when travelling at over 300 km per hour. As a result, it is imperative to use the most advanced technology with a proven track record. Due to its linear structure, you have to bear in mind that the cables are the most sensitive and difficult items to protect in the entire system. Achieving the highest level of product quality has always been the commitment of Nexans, and the recognition we now enjoy in the market is one of our most prized assets".

The supply of these cables will be matched to the actual requirements of the process of installation of the projects, and it consolidates Nexans' position as the leading manufacturer of this type of cable, especially in view of the major role it has already played in the Madrid-Lleida high-speed line.
